As Jimmy Kimmel Live! continues riding a wave of extra attention following recent political controversy and viral monologues, the show itself will be quiet this week. But there's a good reason the show be on the air.
ABC announced Jimmy Kimmel Live! will air reruns all week, beginning Monday, May 11. It comes
during an especially eventful moment for Kimmel, whose show has dominated headlines in recent weeks following renewed attacks from Donald Trump and Melania Trump.
But host Jimmy Kimmel won’t be completely absent from late-night television, however. On Monday night, Kimmel is set to appear in New York for Stephen Colbert’s special Strike Force Five reunion episode alongside fellow hosts Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver. It marks Kimmel's final appearance on The Late Show, a program that holds special significance to Kimmel dating back to his love of David Letterman.
The other Strike Force Five hosts in late-night will do the same on Monday night. Over on NBC, both The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Kimmel and Late Night with Seth Meyers will be in reruns to start the week. Rather than try to produce a brand-new episode and stop by the The Late Show, Fallon and Meyers have chose to go dark for one night.
Even with no new episodes this week, ABC is filling the schedule with some of Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s biggest recent installments. Monday’s rerun brings back an episode featuring Steve Carell, Mike Tyson, and a musical performance from The Avett Brothers, along with Mike Patton. It originally aired on May 6.
Tuesday’s episode revisits Kimmel’s conversations with country star Jelly Roll and comedian Nicole Byer from May 4. Wednesday’s rerun features Sharon Stone, Caitriona Balfe, and a performance from punk rock veterans Social Distortion from May 7.
Thursday night turns to comedy with John Mulaney and actress Eiza González. The episode originally aired on May 5. Then on Friday, the week wraps with an eclectic lineup led by Oscar winner Goldie Hawn, alongside Deli Boys stars Asif Ali, Saagar Shaikh, and music legends Duran Duran and Nile Rodgers. Fans can tune in if they missed the original broadcast from April 29.
Jimmy Kimmel will be back in Los Angeles with new episodes of his show beginning on Monday, May 18. The quiet week for Jimmy Kimmel Live! also leaves even more of the late-night spotlight on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which is entering its final stretch before ending on May 21. With Colbert loading up on major guests and special reunion moments, Kimmel’s absence only adds to the sense that the late-night world is all about Colbert this week.
