Fallout from the shocking incident at the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner continued to escalate Monday, pulling Jimmy Kimmel into the mix. First Lady Melania Trump joined the growing chorus of those calling for ABC to fire the late-night TV host.

In the wake of a gunman attempting to storm the annual dinner and later revealing in a manifesto that his goal was to assassinate President Donald Trump, critics have zeroed in on Kimmel’s comedy from days earlier. During a mock White House Correspondents’ Dinner segment on his show, Kimmel delivered a series of jokes aimed at the president and his inner circle, including a line suggesting Melania Trump had the look of “an expectant widow.”

The joke initially drew little attention. But following the attempted attack, it has been widely circulated online, with critics including Senator Ted Cruz and prominent social media personalities arguing it contributed to a broader climate of political violence.

On Monday, Melania Trump responded directly in a post on X that quickly gained traction, racking up more than a million views within an hour. The First Lady wrote:

"Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America. People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behavior at the expense of our community.""

The response marks a notable shift for Melania Trump, who has historically refrained from engaging with late-night hosts, at least not anywhere near the level of her husband. Her decision to speak out suggests how seriously the incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is being taken within Trump’s orbit. Or, more cynically, it indicates how it's being used as an excuse to attack one of the most prominent Trump critics.

Kimmel’s joke in question was not framed as an endorsement of violence, but rather as part of a common critique of the president's age and health. It's the kind of humor that has been a staple of late-night comedy across the past two administrations. Stephen Colbert recently revealed the Late Show wrote a similar joke, but decided it wasn't worth the kind of headache now facing Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

ABC now finds itself in a familiar scenario. The network previously took action by temporarily pulling Kimmel from the air following backlash tied to his comments about conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC ultimately renewed its support for Kimmel, and the late-night host publicly indicated he was on good terms with his bosses.

However, the First Lady's involvement raises the stakes for ABC. There's still time for executives to pull the plug on Monday's episode and see if things calm down. It wouldn't be the first time the White House successfully applied pressure to a broadcaster.

But hopefully ABC stands behind Kimmel and gives the comedian a chance to respond on Monday night. The late-night host is used to defending himself and calling out any hypocrisy he sees from the other side. Tonight's monologue has the chance to draw one of Kimmel's biggest audiences in recent memory, as long as ABC gives him the opportunity.
