For much of his career, Craig Ferguson built his reputation as television’s most unpredictable late-night host. During his decade behind the desk of The Late Late Show, Ferguson frequently abandoned traditional talk-show conventions in favor of whatever he felt in the moment. That background makes him a fascinating choice to lead CNN’s newest documentary project.
Craig Ferguson: American on Purpose is a five-part series arriving as the nation prepares to mark its 250th anniversary. The program follows Ferguson as he travels across the country examining some of the ideas that have long defined the American identity, including free speech, entrepreneurship, patriotism, self-reliance, and the experience of newcomers building lives in the United States.
The docuseries will air weekly on Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on CNN, beginning on May 30. Episodes will be made available to stream the following day at CNN.com/watch and on the CNN app for CNN streaming subscribers.
Along the way, Ferguson speaks with a range of public figures and entertainers, including fellow comedian and former late-night TV host Jay Leno, actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish, and actor Jason Biggs. The series takes a road-trip approach to exploring the country, with Ferguson investigating the gap between the stories Americans tell about themselves and the realities he encounters on the ground.
The title will be familiar to longtime Ferguson fans. It echoes Ferguson’s bestselling 2009 memoir, which chronicled his journey from Scotland to American citizenship and reflected on the cultural differences that shaped his view of the country. More than 15 years later, the television series revisits many of those same themes.
What makes the project especially noteworthy is how naturally Ferguson has transitioned into documentary and nonfiction television since departing The Late Late Show in 2014. At the time, few would have predicted that the comedian best known for robot skeleton sidekicks and off-the-cuff interviews would become a reliable host for thoughtful travel, history, and culture programs.
In 2017, he hosted Join or Die with Craig Ferguson for the History Channel, a panel series that mixed historical discussion with comedy. The show demonstrated his ability to make complex subjects accessible without sacrificing entertainment value.
Perhaps most relevant to his new CNN project was his work on Couple Thinkers, a travel-documentary series he hosted alongside his wife, Megan Wallace Cunningham. The program took viewers around the world exploring art, architecture, culture, and history, offering a glimpse of Ferguson’s curiosity beyond comedy.
With Craig Ferguson: American on Purpose, CNN is betting the former late-night host's perspective will resonate with viewers looking to reflect on the nation’s past, present, and future. If Ferguson’s post-late-night career is any indication, he may be one of the few television personalities capable of pulling it off.
