FCC reportedly reviewing Disney's TV licenses following Kimmel controversy

The fallout from Jimmy Kimmel’s latest controversy may be heading into far more serious territory. The Trump administration's latest move could put the kind of pressure on Disney that forces a major decision about the late-night host's future.

According to a report from Semafor, the Federal Communications Commission is taking steps for a potential review of The Walt Disney Company’s broadcast licenses. It's the FCC that licenses ABC’s TV stations and affiliates across the country, suggesting it could control what Disney puts out on the airwaves.

Sources familiar with the matter told the outlet that the FCC could initiate what’s known as an early license review, though it has not yet made a final decision. Even the possibility of such a move, signals how seriously the administration is treating the situation.

Semafor also reports source with knowledge of the FCC’s thinking said the timing wasn’t "directly linked to the Kimmel monologue" that set off a frenzy over the weekend. However, it's hard to imagine there's no connection, considering President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump both called for ABC/Disney to fire Kimmel.

Kimmel's mock White House Correspondents’ Dinner segment last week and joke about Melania Trump sparked outrage from President Trump and his allies. The backlash intensified following the real-world violence at this year’s White House Correspondents' Dinner, with critics attempting to link Kimmel’s rhetoric to the broader climate of political violence.

On Monday night, Kimmel struck a pitch-perfect tone in his monologue, defending his intent while expressing sympathy for those affected by the weekend’s events. It felt like an effort to de-escalate while inviting everyone to rethink their approach to political discourse.

But the reported FCC involvement suggests the situation may be far from over. For Disney, the stakes are unusually high. While it’s unlikely the FCC would outright cancel licenses over a late-night comedy segment, even the threat could force the company into difficult decisions.

One option would be to distance itself from Kimmel, either by parting ways with the host or by imposing stricter editorial controls on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to avoid further political blowback. Kimmel previously faced consequences after comments about conservative figure Charlie Kirk triggered backlash, leading to a temporary suspension and some national broadcasters pulling his show from the air. Semafor also noted that Disney shares dropped 1% on Tuesday morning following the news, suggesting economic factors are also at play.

So Disney finds itself in a familiar but uncomfortable position. It deserves credit for not taking Kimmel off the air Monday night. But now it must balance its role as a major media company with political and regulatory risk. The current administration has made it clear that networks can be held accountable for jokes made by late-night TV hosts.

It's worth watching how the rest of the week will play out on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Kimmel could try to lower the temperature to avoid more pressure on his bosses. Or he could punch back harder, even if means he's going down swinging.
