After decades as one of comedy’s most recognizable voices, Bill Maher says he’s stepping away from stand-up comedy for good. The Real Time host gave his reasons, confirming what he promised to do last year.

Speaking on a recent episode of his Club Random podcast, the 70-year-old comedian revealed that his most recent special, taped in December 2024 and released about a year ago, marked the end of his run on the road. Bill Maher: Is Anyone Else Seeing This? released on HBO in January 2025.

For Maher, the decision wasn’t easy. Stand-up had been a constant in his life since his early 20s, when he moved to New York City to pursue comedy, performing at iconic clubs like Catch a Rising Star and The Improv. “Obviously, it’s like cutting off your arm,” he admitted to guest David Cross. “I mean, I’ve been doing this … there’s nothing that’s more consistent throughout my whole life.”

Maher pointed out his age, suggesting that 70 felt like a good number to call it quits. The comedian also cited the health hazards that come with traveling across the country. According to Maher, plane travel and hotel stays just weren't worth the hassle after decades on the road.

While the news may be disappointing for Maher's fans, it wasn't as if the announcement came out of nowhere. Maher referenced his retirement during a May 2024 Club Random episode with Jerry Seinfeld in which he said he'd be done following his special.

That same year, Maher confirmed that he had no interest in playing college campuses, either. He complained about the potential for protests at colleges and universities to guest Ray Romano. Maher chose to skip campuses altogether rather than deal with a crowd not receptive to comedy. Beyond that, it also signaled that the comedian's time on tour was winding down.

The career move certainly doesn't mean that Maher is going anywhere. Earlier this year, HBO renewed its contract with the comedian. Real Time with Bill Maher will stay on the air at least through 2028.

Maher also seems to be enjoying his time on Club Random. The podcast boasts over 700,000 subscribers on YouTube, and Maher has been able to get some of the biggest names in comedy, entertainment, and politics to sit down with him.

Later this year, Maher will receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The event will be a celebration of his entire career, perhaps marking another reason to call it a day when it comes to stand-up comedy.

Maher finishes with an impressive comedy resume that includes 13 HBO specials over 30 years, on top of the thousands of hours spent entertaining live audiences around the world.
