The Late Show with Stephen Colbert canceled? It’s hard to imagine, but the CBS late-night TV show hasn’t been seen in months.

There hasn’t been a new episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert since May 1. To say a lot has happened since then would be an understatement. Late-night TV fans have been left without their normal voice of reason as Colbert’s show stays dark.

The good news is that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has not been canceled. The show remains on hiatus due to the Writers’ Guild of America strike.

Colbert’s show has not aired new episodes without a writing staff. Also, there have been no announcements regarding a return without WGA writers. That would be similar to what late-night shows, including The Colbert Report, attempted to do in 2007 during the last WGA strike.

What is Stephen Colbert’s contract with CBS?

Given the popularity and success of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, it’s highly unlikely the show will ever be at risk of cancelation. Yes, late-night TV shows can be expensive to produce. But Colbert has proven to be a valuable asset to CBS.

And with the 2024 election around the corner and former president Donald Trump facing multiple indictments, it’s looking like the perfect time for The Late Show to regain its foothold in pop culture and politics. When that happens remains to be seen given the current state of negotiations between the WGA and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

But when a deal is finally reached, Stephen Colbert will be back on the air. And CBS also has no plans of letting him go anytime soon. The comedian recently signed a new contract that keeps him at the network through 2026. It’s safe to say the deal contributed to Colbert’s already impressive net worth.
