John Mulaney and his son have a love of wiffle ball that few can match. The comedian recently told Conan O’Brien why he’s up at the crack of dawn with a bat in his hand.

Mulaney returned to Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend this week. The former Saturday Night Live writer revealed he feels “cornered” about being O’Brien’s friend before the pair got into a wide-ranging conversation.

When things turned to family, Mulaney discussed how his entire outlook on life changed following the birth of his son, Malcolm. One benefit of fatherhood has been how Mulaney’s athletic prowess is perceived by his nearly 2-year-old child.

Mulaney told O’Brien that his son is truly amazed by how far Mulaney can hit a baseball. The reactions of “woah” and “dadda, do that” have meant more to Mulaney than any applause or compliment he’s received.

In fact, Malcolm Mulaney’s love of wiffle ball has led to some early morning games. Mulaney revealed that his son often wakes up before 5 a.m. and immediately requests they play baseball. It Mulaney described the subsequent scene as “two morons” holding wiffle ball bats in the front yard at 5 in the morning.

John Mulaney and his son also follow garbage trucks

It may be a strange sight to see John Mulaney and his son playing a pre-dawn game of wiffle ball. The only thing even more odd may be when they start following garbage trucks down the street.

Mulaney told O’Brien that Malcolm is also very entertained by garbage trucks (and his dad’s impression of one). That means the Mulaney boys have followed garbage trucks down the street to get a better look.

Clearly, John Mulaney is leading a very different lifestyle as a father. But as he explained to Conan O’Brien, he wouldn’t want it any other way. He’s a less anxious person now that his entire life is filtered through his son’s eyes. So if that means playing wiffle ball and chasing garbage trucks while the rest of the world sleeps, Mulaney is happy to play along.
