CNN is reportedly seeking out a comedian to take over a primetime show on the network.

According to Semafor, the 9-11 pm timeslot could have a similar feel to a traditional late-night show such as The Tonight Show or Jimmy Kimmel Live. The network is currently assessing a number of possible options for a host, with the likes of Bill Maher and Jon Stewart in the mix.

An insider told the outlet that CNN is seeking an alternative to John Oliver, who continues to host a popular HBO show.

Fox News attempted this strategy relatively recently with longtime anchor, Greg Gutfeld.

Gutfeld, having appeared on the 24-hour news channel for a number of years, was given the opportunity to rival Colbert and Fallon with Fox’s very first late-night show. The conservative commentator has proven to be a hit with audiences, often surpassing The Late Show in the ratings.

Can CNN create a new Gutfeld?

It’s clear that CNN’s reported interest in the entertainment world will be far more of a risk. Fox News were able to promote an entertainment talk show alongside running coverage of a supposed liberal bias within traditional late-night television. CNN, on the other hand, will inevitably have to battle a number of high-profile hosts who have already maintained a loyal audience base.

We also know Bill Maher is still bound by a contract with HBO up until 2024 with Real Time. So, unless HBO and CNN can get together and discuss a deal, Maher appears off the cards.

In any case, it’s clear that CNN is attempting several desperate strategies to maintain its relevance in the news cycle. Maybe a late-night show format could save the channel from its increasingly worrying viewing figures.
