Is Saturday Night Live new tonight, December 17?
By Matt Moore
We’re inching ever closer to Christmas, which means the holiday season is in full swing. So what should Saturday Night Live fans expect to see tonight on NBC?
Last week, comedy icons Steve Martin and Martin Short co-hosted what became the highest-rated episode of SNL season 48. The show also included some holiday sketches, leading some fans to wonder if it counted as the show’s annual Christmas episode.
But SNL isn’t done giving out gifts for the year just yet. There will be a brand new episode of Saturday Night Live tonight.
Elvis star Austin Butler makes his SNL debut as host. He’ll be joined by musical guest Lizzo, replacing the previously announced Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The rock band had to back out after guitarist Nick Zinner was hospitalized.
What to expect from Saturday Night Live tonight
The first thing fans will notice is that tonight is indeed the Christmas episode. Studio 8H will be decorated, and we can expect the monologue and multiple sketches to be all about the holidays.
Saturday Night Live lampoons the holidays better than anything else, so there’s a good chance we’ll see an instant classic tonight.
Outside of the holidays, it’s hard to imagine SNL will ignore Donald Trump’s recent “big announcement.” The rest of late-night TV had fun at the expense of Trump’s NFT trading card collection. A QVC-style parody featuring James Austin Johnson’s Trump could be in the cards.
There’s also a good chance that Lizzo will put in some work outside of her musical performances. She hosted last season, so she knows the show inside and out. Look for Lizzo to pop up in a holiday music parody at minimum.
