Rumours allege Late Late Show writers are attempting to sabotage Corden
After weeks of allegations, rumours, and backlash, James Corden continues to make headlines. After facing a major PR disaster after being ousted by a restaurant owner for “abusive behaviour”, the Late Late Show host has now been accused of stealing jokes for his late-night show.
During a recent episode of The Late Late Show, Corden recited a comedy segment, first heard during Ricky Gervais’ Humanity tour.
Corden responded to the backlash, something the host has often feared doing. Earlier in the fall, when it was announced that he had been banned from an NYC restaurant, the host stayed quiet until finally making a television statement.
On Twitter, Corden told his followers: “Inadvertently told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night, obviously not knowing it came from him. It’s brilliant, because it’s a Ricky Gervais joke. You can watch all Ricky’s excellent specials on Netflix. J x”
Unsurprisingly, viewers were left baffled by Corden’s response, with some even alleging that his own staff were purposely sabotaging the host by feeding him stolen material.
One user wrote on Twitter in reaction: “Seen lots of people tweeting this about how awful James Corden is for nicking the joke, when I’m assuming someone in Corden’s writers’ room fucked him over, which is just delicious.”
Another assumed the same, saying: “It’s entirely likely James Corden’s writers screwed him over with the Gervais joke.”
The same tweet pointed out that Corden is famously unfamiliar with his production staff. During a segment with Jimmy Kimmel, Corden had failed to name just two of the cameramen working on his studio floor.
Ricky Gervais did respond to the late-night segment, however, suggesting that Corden couldn’t have blatantly stolen such a joke.
Can Corden overcome the backlash?
It’s no secret that James Corden has his fair share of critics. Some have even labelled the British comedian the most unpopular in the television category’s history.
Even with Corden expected to leave The Late Late Show at the end of the year, the ongoing stream of backlash must at some point instigate a wake-up call.
The Late Late Show host is expected to return to the United Kingdom after his late-night run. Reports have suggested that Corden may even bring back the popular sitcom, Gavin and Stacey although still up in the air.
