After a busy weekend spent trending on social media, James Corden returns to the airwaves on Monday night. A brand new episode of The Late Late Show gives Corden another chance to respond to the controversy surrounding his restaurant ban.

On October 18, New York City restauranteur Keith McNally blasted Corden on Instagram. McNally claimed Corden was rude to the waitstaff and was subsequently banned from Balthazar in Manhattan.

However, McNallys update later that day indicated Corden called and apologized. As a result, the ban was lifted. But the story didn’t end there.

An October 20 interview with Corden included quotes from the comedian denying any wrongdoing. Corden argued the entire “scandal” only existed in a small corner of social media.

McNally responded again by supporting his staff and their claims about Corden’s behavior. The restaurant owner went so far as to offer Corden 10 years of free meals if he apologized to two members of his staff.

James Corden could respond again on tonight’s Late Late Show

The reaction to James Corden’s quasi-retraction wasn’t great. The comedian, who already has a questionable reputation according to many on the web, didn’t do himself any favors by suggesting the entire situation was beneath him. Both sides made the story bigger than it needed to be, with social media helping to fan the flames.

So with that, it’s interesting to see what James Corden does in his first new show since the controversy began. Will it ignore the elephant in the room and be business as usual? Or will he take time at the desk to address his audience directly?

All the signs point to Corden talking about the story tonight on The Late Late Show. Clearly, he wants to tell his side of the story. And with a studio audience that (should be) already on his side along with a writing staff to help craft his response. Corden finds himself in an ideal environment.

Fans may recall the last time Corden was in a semi-scandal. Internet sleuths discovered that some “Carpool Karaoke” segments are staged. Corden doesn’t actually drive the car every time and instead gets towed around the city. The late-night host made a point to respond during The Late Late Show.

Restaurantgate has become a bigger story than the “Carpool Karaoke” news. Corden is on the way out at CBS, so there’s no reason for him to hold back if he feels like this situation needs to be addressed.
