Jeopardy! returned on Monday night with another brand new episode. Did the returning champion make it two in a row, or is there a new winner to celebrate?

The game show kicked off season 39 with Luigi de Guzman winning a few more games before being dethroned.

Who is the current Jeopardy! champion?

Emmett Stanton, a freelance writer from Baltimore, Maryland, entered tonight’s game as the current Jeopardy! champion. His one-day total stood at $25,800.

His competition on Monday included Jason Freeman, an event producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Suzanne Goss, an oncology advertising consultant from Brooklyn, New York.

Stanton proved his experience was an advantage in the “Jeopardy!” round. He banked $7,200, giving him a lead over Freeman ($4,400) and Goss (-$600).

The game became much more exciting in “Double Jeopardy!” play. Goss mounted a comeback that saw her take the lead with $8,600. Freeman wasn’t far behind with $8,400, nor was Stanton with $8,000.

It all came down to “Final Jeopardy!” where only one player answered correctly. Emmett Stanton had the right response, keeping him as the Jeopardy! champion. His two-day winnings now total $41,800.
