Through two episodes this week, Jeopardy! has seen its returning champion put together a mini winning streak. So what happened on Wednesday night?

The paydays haven’t exactly been huge on Jeopardy! this week. However, the games have been competitive.

Who is the current Jeopardy! champion?

Ed Coulson, an economics and real estate professor from Dana Point, California, is the current Jeopardy! champion. In two victories, he’s totaled $40,200.

His competition on Wednesday included Brianne Barker, a biology professor from Madison, New Jersey, and Colleen Birney, a court monitor from Milford, Connecticut.

Barker got a comfortable lead after “Jeopardy!” play finished. She banked $8,700, while Coulson sat in second with $3,600. Birney landed in third with $2,000.

However, Coulson fought back in the “Double Jeopardy!” round and led with $17,600. Barker wasn’t far behind with $14,700, while Birney remained in third with $8,200.

All three players answered “Final Jeopardy!” incorrectly. Coulson’s big wager backfired and he dropped to second. Barker got the win and became the new Jeopardy! champion.

What was tonight’s Final Jeopardy! clue?

The final clue was definitely a tough one. Here it is in the category “Real People in Poetry”:

Answer: Who is Galileo?

Colleen Birney couldn’t come up with a response. Brianne Barker guessed John Donne, while Ed Coulson wrote down Edmund Spenser. It’s understandable that the players assumed Milton would write about another poet. But the line comes from Paradise Lost in reference to the famous astronomer.
