Mattea Roach looked to close out another week as Jeopardy! champion. So, how did she do on Friday night?
Roach has been dominating the competition for over three weeks at this point. Entering Friday’s game, the tutor from Toronto has won 23 consecutive games and earned $560,983.
Her newest competition on Friday included Danielle Maurer, a digital marketing manager from Peachtree Corners, Georgia, and Betsy Hobbs, a senior operations manager originally from Thornton, Illinois.
Who won Jeopardy! tonight?
Mattea Roach found herself in a competitive match after the “Jeopardy!” round. She led with $7,800, but Danielle Maurer wasn’t too far behind with $5,600. Meanwhile, Betsy Hobbs had a lot of catching up to do at $200.
Roach extended her lead in the “Double Jeopardy!” round. She finished with $19,200, good enough to top Maurer’s $11,400. Hobbs bounced back nicely and wound up with $7,400.
“Final Jeopardy!” brought a shocking upset. Roach failed to come up with the correct response and it cost her $3,601. Maurer did have the right response and added $4,200 to her total. It was enough to defeat Roach and become the new Jeopardy! champion.
Some fans may argue that Roach bet too much on the final clue. Regardless, Roach’s streak comes to an end at an impressive 23 games.

Tonight’s “Final Jeopardy!” wasn’t easy, as demonstrated by the fact only one player answered correctly. Here’s the clue in the category “USA”:

Betsy Hobbs incorrectly wrote down “Mavory and Jorbles” as her response. Mattea Roach went with “Churchill and Downs,” along with a note admitting she had no idea.
