Jimmy Kimmel has COVID, announces guest host for late-night show
By Matt Moore
Jimmy Kimmel announced he has COVID-19 and will take the week off from his late-night TV show on ABC. Comedian Mike Birbiglia will fill in as guest host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! until Kimmel returns.
In a tweet on Monday afternoon, Kimmel stated that his daughter “brought” his family COVID. The comedian confirmed that he is double vaccinated and received a booster shot. Kimmel indicated that he feels fine.
Tom Cruise and Iliza Shlesinger were slated to appear on Monday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Kimmel apologized to both performers for the cancelation. However, the show will return even without Kimmel.
Comedian Mike Birbiglia, who was slated to appear as a guest on Tuesday night, will now fill in as Kimmel’s guest host. Birbiglia’s episodes will begin on Tuesday when Mike Myers is scheduled to appear.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! is used to guest hosts
While subbing in for one of late-night TV’s most popular hosts is no easy task, Mike Birbiglia should know that he’s in good hands. Beyond the comedian’s own talents, he should benefit from Jimmy Kimmel Live!‘s long history of guest hosts.
Over the years, Kimmel has missed several episodes due to family emergencies, work outside of late-night TV, and vacation. In many cases, the show goes on without him.
David Spade, Dua Lipa, Anthony Anderson, Blake Griffin, Brie Larson, and Jennifer Lawrence are among those who have stepped in for Kimmel. And in every case, the show made sure to put the host in the best possible position to succeed.
It should be an exciting week of shows despite Kimmel’s absence. It is unclear how long the host expects to be out or if additional guest hosts will be announced. Stay tuned for updates.
