Mattea Roach looked to make it 18 games in a row on Thursday’s Jeopardy!. So how did the returning champion do?
Roach has become one of the more popular contestants in recent Jeopardy! history. The tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada is also among the show’s best performers, earning $396,182 heading into tonight’s game.
Standing in her way were Manav Jain, an undergraduate student from Clemson, South Carolina, and Renée Russell, a branch office administrator from Baltimore, Maryland.
Who won Jeopardy! tonight?
The “Jeopardy!” round went a little more like fans of Mattea Roach are used to seeing. She held the lead after the first batch of questions, winning $9,800. In second place sat Renée Russell with $5,200 followed by Manav Jain with $3,000.
However, things got much more competitive in the “Double Jeopardy!” round. Roach finished with $22,600 and Russell was close behind at $21,000. Unfortunately for Jain, he never gained any traction and finished with $600.
It all came down to “Final Jeopardy!,” something Roach fans aren’t used to seeing. Russell couldn’t come up the correct answer to challenge Roach, who did get the right response to continue her streak. The tutor from Toronto added $42,001 to her bank account to make her total $438,183.
What was tonight’s Final Jeopardy! clue?
Tonight’s “Final Jeopardy!” clue tripped out two out of three players. Here it is in the category “Books of the 1970s”:

Answer: What is Song of Solomon?
Jain could not come up with a response, while Russell incorrectly wrote down “What is Roots?” as her answer.
