Jeopardy may have been back on Monday with a new episode, but it featured a familiar face as returning champion Mattea Roach was back defending her title. Here’s how things played out on tonight’s episode.
Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was on a four-game winning streak entering Monday night. Her cash winnings total $104,600.
Tonight, she faced off against Michael Wolman, a marketing manager from Austin, Texas, and Vanessa McCombs, a college instructor from Manassas, Virginia.
Who won Jeopardy! tonight?
Roach used her experience on the buzzer to control 16 questions in the “Jeopardy!” round. She answered 15 correctly on the way to banking $7,000. Michael Wolman wasn’t too far behind with $5,200. McCombs had a lot of catching up to do after finishing the first round with $600.
In “Double Jeopardy!,” Wolman made sure that the game stayed interesting. He earned $5,000 on a “Daily Double” while totaling $12,600 in the round. Roach stayed close at $10,200, while McCombs never got any momentum going and finished with $2,600.
“Final Jeopardy!” was an interesting one as only Roach answered correctly. Her relatively small wager of $2,400 proved to be enough to put her over the top and give her another victory.

Tonight’s “Final Jeopardy!” question frustrated two players, and probably plenty more watching at home. Here’s the clue in the category “Word of the Year”:
Oxford’s Word of the Year for 2021 was this 3-letter one, short for a word that goes back to the Latin for “cow”
Answer: What is vax?
Michael Wolman and Vanessa McCombs both guessed “What is bov?” as their answer. It cost Wolman $8,000 and McCombs lost all $2,600 she had going into the final clue. Roach’s correct answer helped bump her total winnings up to $117,200.
