Who’s hosting Saturday Night Live tonight, February 26?
By Matt Moore
Saturday Night Live returns with a brand new episode tonight after a brief hiatus. And SNL fans should be very excited for the night’s host.
SNL has been on break since January 29. NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics put season 47 on hold, but Studio 8H will be back in action on Saturday.
Stand-up comedian and former SNL writer John Mulaney returns to host for the fifth time. He’ll be joined by musical guest LCD Soundsystem.
Mulaney first hosted Saturday Night Live in 2018, making him one of the fastest hosts to reach the Five Timers Club in the show’s history. Only Buck Henry and Steve Martin did it in a shorter period.
What to expect from John Mulaney on Saturday Night Live
Like any comic who gets to host Saturday Night Live, John Mulaney will be at his best during the monologue. His previous four openers have all been hilarious and among the highlights of their respective episodes.
Expect Mulaney and SNL to acknowledge his entrance into the Five Timers Club. Mulaney becomes the second host this season to join the club after Paul Rudd. Unfortunately, Rudd was denied a traditional ceremony due to the limited cast and crew present during his episode thanks to the pandemic. Hopefully, Mulaney gets a little more shine.
It’s also hard to imagine Mulaney avoiding discussing his personal life in the monologue. The comedian had a very public rehab stay, followed by a divorce. Then, his relationship with Olivia Munn became public and the two later welcomed a son.
Mulaney recapped his relapse and rehab stay during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Saturday Night Live is practically home for Mulaney, so he may feel even more comfortable talking about his life while on the Studio 8H stage.
When it comes to sketches, fans will surely expect another New York City-inspired musical led by John Mulaney. Maybe a look back at how the city handled the pandemic will offer a way for Mulaney to add to his famous sketches.
Saturday Night Live airs at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC. It also streams live on Peacock.
