Rudy Giuliani became a national hero in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attack. His leadership as mayor of New York City earned praise from around the country and the world. Twenty years later, Giuliani has a much different public image. And as Stephen Colbert pointed out on The Late Show, Giuliani did little to change that perception during a recent speech.

Giuliani’s loyalty to former President Donald Trump made him a frequent punchline for late-night TV hosts like Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Kimmel. The president’s personal attorney provided plenty of material thanks to gaffes like his leaking hair dye and his press conference from Four Seasons Landscaping.

Those past blunders set the stage for Giuliani’s speech commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11. In a rambling speech reminiscent of his former boss, Giuliani delivered an off-topic rant that had some questioning his sobriety.

Stephen Colbert shared his thoughts on the speech during Monday night’s episode of The Late Show. The comedian also broke down Giuliani’s defense against those claims he was drunk.

Stephen Colbert isn’t buying Rudy Giuliani’s excuses and explanations

Rudy Giuliani’s speech at a 9/11 anniversary event immediately caught the nation’s attention, but for all the wrong reasons. It was enough to make many people forget that Donald Trump spent part of his day commentating on an exhibition boxing match.

Giuliani’s speech included a Queen Elizabeth impression and a bizarre story about Prince Andrew. It didn’t take long for some to suggest that Giuliani was drunk. When asked for his response, Giuliani did little to help his case.

Colbert points out that Giuliani admitted to having a scotch before taking the stage. From there, the Late Show host let the former mayor do most of the work when it came to making the audience laugh.

Giuliani’s defense that he is “functioning” but not an alcoholic especially amused Colbert. Another line from Giuliani saying he didn’t remember the last time he was drunk was about as good as anything Colbert and his team could have drawn up.
