Jimmy Kimmel recaps Rudy Giuliani’s perfect call to Ukraine
By Matt Moore
Rudy Giuliani is back in the news and it’s more bad news for the attorney and former mayor. Audio released by CNN suggests that former President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer was involved in the quid pro quo scheme with Ukraine that led to Trump’s first impeachment. Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue got viewers caught up on the story.
Giuliani found himself not only a major part of the last election but a major part of late night television. His frequent gaffes on cable news channels and on the campaign trail made for easy jokes on shows like Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
In exclusive audio, CNN released clips from 2019 of Giuliani pressuring a Ukrainian official to open an investigation into Joe Biden ahead of the election. It is the same scheme that President Trump was accused of engaging in, which ultimately led to his first impeachment.
Jimmy Kimmel wasn’t exactly surprised by the audio or the revelation that Rudy Giuliani was in the thick of another political scandal. Kimmel’s monologue called it the “second-most damaging tape” after the infamous Borat scene.
Jimmy Kimmel: Rudy Giuliani may want to call a lawyer
Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t pass up the chance to remind his viewers of Rudy Giuliani’s bizarre hair dye incident from last year. It’s unlikely that any story involving the former New York City mayor can come up without some joke about leaks or hair entering the conversation.
But Kimmel also sees much bigger problems on the horizon for Giuliani. The late night host suggested that Giuliani should call up a lawyer after CNN released the audio of his call with a Ukrainian official.
Donald Trump defended his chat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “perfect call.” Not many people bought into that categorization. Considering it came on the heels of Giuliani’s call, it’s even harder to accept Trump’s explanation. As Kimmel put it, there was nothing subtle about Rudy’s call in what sounded like a clear quid pro quo offer.
