Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz continues to deny allegations stemming from a sex trafficking investigation. The Republican representative has the support of at least one conservative group in a move that hardly shocked Stephen Colbert.

Last week, it was reported that the Department of Justice was looking into an alleged relationship between Gaetz and a 17-year-old girl. The investigation is trying to discover if Gaetz paid for the girl to travel with him across state lines.

For his part, Gaetz has denied all wrongdoing and claimed that he is the victim of an extortion scheme. Few politicians have come to his defense while critics, including those in late night TV, continue to hammer Gaetz over the allegations.

But now there is at least one group coming out in support of Matt Gaetz. The Congressman is scheduled to appear at an event organized by a conservative women’s group–the same group that organized former President Donald Trump’s Jan. 6 rally in D.C. In his monologue, Stephen Colbert made it clear he wasn’t surprised to see MAGA supporters back Gaetz.

Stephen Colbert recaps the latest in the Matt Gaetz scandal and investigation

Of course, Stephen Colbert is happy to let the Department of Justice investigation play out. But in the meantime, the Late Show host is paying close attention to all the reports coming out around Matt Gaetz.

That includes reports that Gaetz asked former President Donald Trump for a preemptive pardon at the end of Trump’s term. It doesn’t exactly scream innocence to Colbert nor is the comedian convinced by Gaetz’s excuse. According to Colbert, any request deemed too shady by the Trump White House must be really bad.

Meanwhile, Gaetz is set to appear at an event organized by Women for America First. Colbert pushes back at the group’s defense of Gaetz and description of him as a “fearless leader.” The Late Show reminds everyone that the Congressman has a lot to fear right now.

The expectation would be that any organization would keep its distance from Matt Gaetz until the investigation concludes. But for the die-hard MAGA crowd, this isn’t an option. Stephen Colbert never sounds shocked in his monologue, probably because of the years he spent condemning the lack of morality in Trump World.
