Conan Without Borders’ most popular moments
By Matt Moore
Conan Without Borders has become one of Conan O’Brien’s most successful segments, bringing his fans along for trips of a lifetime. The travel specials have also produced some of the most popular moments in Conan’s late night television career.
As the calendar flips from March to April, this is the time of year when so many people would be enjoying spring break. And while some people have been moving around the country, others remain at home as we wait for life to return to normal.
It’s times like these that Conan O’Brien can provide the escapism that cures what ails us. So if you’re stuck at home, dreaming of a vacation or spring break trip, Conan Without Borders can help put a smile on your face. And if you’re ever in Italy, Japan, or anywhere else Conan has been, you can follow in his footsteps but just try not to cause an international incident.
Here now are some of the most popular moments from Conan O’Brien’s trips around the world. Be sure to let us know which one is your favorite.
Conan Without Borders: Conan visits Jordan’s favorite restaurant in Italy
Conan Without Borders: Italy gave fans the chance to see Conan O’Brien and Jordan Schlansky bring their comedy act on the road. The polar opposites make for a wildly entertaining duo and it doesn’t get any better than Conan ridiculing Jordan while at the producer’s favorite spot in Italy.
But the best moment from their meal may be when Jordan turned the tables on Conan. Schlansky didn’t hold back when describing O’Brien’s Late Night appearance around 2002. The entire back-and-forth between the two friends/enemies/co-workers is worth revisiting again and again.
Conan Without Borders: Conan trains to be a sausage master
Clearly, Conan O’Brien understands the importance of good food and drink while traveling. It’s why we are two-for-two when it comes to his most popular Conan Without Borders moments involving food.
The difference is that his experience in Germany wasn’t quite as elegant as the dinner put together in Italy. O’Brien’s attempt to compare his comedy to making sausage didn’t quite land with the German sausage master and things only spiraled from there.
Conan did whatever he could to avoid eating the sausage so it wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for German food. But it was an example of the comedian at his best and why nobody is better at remote pieces than Conan O’Brien.
Conan Without Borders: Conan rents a family in Japan
Traveling can mean going outside of your comfort zone and experiencing the unfamiliar. Conan O’Brien operates at his best when things aren’t comfortable which is part of the reason Conan Without Borders is so popular.
A case in point was his 2018 trip to Japan. O’Brien did his best to learn about Japanese culture and engage with the Japanese people. But they were the ones who seemed a little uncomfortable when Conan decided to rent the family of his dreams.
Conan Without Borders is always more fun with O’Brien makes himself the butt of the joke. His self-deprecating style of humor can put others at ease. Still, this clip proves that Conan doesn’t always translate even if everyone back home gets a kick out of his antics.
Conan Without Borders: Conan floats in the Dead Sea
Conan Without Borders has put the spotlight on locations that aren’t always the most obvious travel destinations. Yes, millions of tourists flock to Italy and Mexico is still a big spring break hub. But O’Brien has also brought his show to Haiti, Cuba, Greenland, Armenia, and Israel.
Conan’s trip to Israel resulted in some very memorable moments. Fans loved O’Brien’s bit with Israeli actress Gal Gadot, surprising the actress at her apartment only to be (politely) turned away.
The journey also gave Conan the chance to float in the Dead Sea and the late night host pulled more comedy out of the visit than imaginable. Jokes about his paleness, the sight gag of O’Brien covered in mud, and mopping the piano let O’Brien pack a two-minute clip full of comedy.
