Jimmy Kimmel’s Zoomy Awards honor awkward video call moments
By Matt Moore
Award season has been in full swing despite the pandemic so it was only fitting for Jimmy Kimmel to get in on the action during his coronavirus anniversary special. The late night host introduced the Zoomy Awards, honoring awkward video call moments from the past year.
Zoom has become a necessary part of our daily lives during the pandemic. It connects us with loved ones, helps students learn, and provides companies the opportunity to keep working. But it hasn’t been all good things with Zoom. There are plenty of reasons why people don’t like using the video call service.
For late night hosts, Zoom has been both good and bad. In-person interviews have better energy while guests and audiences members in the studio provide more comedy opportunities. On the other hand, Zoom allowed late night to continue during the pandemic and has been the basis for some pretty funny moments.
Jimmy Kimmel took a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to Zoom with the Zoomy Awards. Check out the ceremony below:
Jimmy Kimmel celebrates the Cat Lawyer made famous by Zoom
Technology can be a very fickle thing and seeing people try to navigate Zoom is proof. Filters, upside-down images, and other strange connection moments made it hard for Jimmy Kimmel to narrow down the Zoomy Award nominees.
But in the end, there was really only one real choice about who would bring home the Zoomy. The lawyer-turned-cat took the internet by storm. It gave us headlines like “Layer tells judge ‘I’m not a cat,'” perfectly summing up how bizarre and strange the past year has been.
Kimmel was even able to connect with the lawyer, Rod Ponton so that he could deliver his acceptance speech. The cat filter went up once again, bringing an end to the first (and hopefully only) Zoomy Awards.
