Stephen Colbert fires back at Piers Morgan over Meghan Markle comments
By Matt Moore
Stephen Colbert came to the defense of Meghan Markle on Tuesday night, responding to controversial comments from television personality Piers Morgan about the Duchess of Sussex. It came a day after Morgan announced he was leaving his job as co-host of Good Morning Britain.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah was seen by millions of people around the world. The couple detailed their experiences with racism within the Royal Family and bullying from British tabloids.
The interview drew strong reactions from many people, with most condemning the monarchy and sympathizing with Meghan regarding her mental health struggles. Even late night TV hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel, James Corden, and Jimmy Fallon shared their thoughts.
In Great Britain, television host Piers Morgan was strongly criticized for his comments in which he stated he did not believe Meghan Markle about her mental health struggles and questioned her allegations of racism. Stephen Colbert’s monologue last night allowed the Late Show host to respond and he didn’t hold back:
Stephen Colbert calls out Piers Morgan insensitivity and hypocrisy
Stephen Colbert didn’t waste any time insulting Piers Morgan. A clip of Morgan questioning if it was wrong to ask about the race of a baby was met with Colbert calling Morgan a type of British dessert that sounds a little more offensive here in the States.
Morgan doubled down on his controversial comments by emphatically declaring that he didn’t believe anything Meghan Markle said, especially concerning her suicidal thoughts. Colbert makes a joke out of it but it is clear that the late night comedian is condemning Morgan for his insensitivity.
Colbert went on to highlight Morgan’s hypocrisy as the television host stormed off the set of Good Morning Britain after being challenged by another anchor. As Colbert put it, “Piers Morgan is such a baby, someone at Buckingham Palace just asked what color he’s going to be.”
The news that Morgan was leaving Good Morning Britain was even celebrated by Colbert. He quipped that tomorrow will be a great morning in Britain.
Has the Stephen Colbert-Piers Morgan feud been reignited?
This was not the first time that Stephen Colbert has gone after Piers Morgan. The two have exchanged words in the past.
Back in 2018, Colbert was discussing negotiations between the U.S. and European Union over tariffs. His monologue included wondering if Europeans “can do stupid” to which Colbert responded, “I’ve met Piers Morgan.”
Morgan took to Twitter and said that Colbert would find out how stupid Europeans are when James Corden took Colbert’s job. It was a bold prediction back then and has seemed less likely as time has passed. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is late night’s top show and James Corden is reportedly considering a move back to England.
We’ll have to wait and see if Morgan responds to Colbert’s latest jabs. But it may take a while because there is a long line of critics Morgan will have to go through before he gets to Stephen Colbert.
