On Feb. 7, two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL will face off as the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers go head-to-head in Super Bowl LV. After that, one of late night TV’s best takes the stage as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert goes on for a special episode.

Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes will be the storyline going into the game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. For Brady, it’s his 10th Super Bowl at age 43 and for the 25-year-old Mahomes, he’ll look to go back-to-back.

For viewers at home, the game will be unlike any other in recent memory. The coronavirus pandemic will limit the number of fans in attendance. It will also have an effect on the halftime show featuring The Weeknd as well as the commercials.

Viewers who stick around after the game and after the Lombardi Trophy is handed out will be treated to a special edition of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Colbert made the announcement last night on his show:

It will be the second special show for The Late Show in less than a month. Fans will recall that Colbert was live following President Joe Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20. That came after Colbert broadcast special episodes on election night and after the debates.

While a special show is nothing new for Stephen Colbert and The Late Show, it will be a bit different to do a show on a Sunday night. It won’t be the first time, however, as Colbert was also on after the Super Bowl just two years ago.

Relive one of Stephen Colbert’s best football moments

Stephen Colbert isn’t the first late night host that comes to mind when fans think of sports. Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers are much more likely to bring up the NFL on their respective shows or go out of the way to interview an athlete.

But that doesn’t mean Colbert hasn’t combined comedy and sports in the past. Some viewers may recall when the Late Show host had his skills assessed for Madden 19.

Colbert is also familiar with Buccaneers’ quarterback Tom Brady. The six-time Super Bowl champion was a guest on The Late Show in 2018 and Colbert tested some of his talents off the football field. Namely, the comedian wanted to see just how fast Brady could chug a beer.

Never one to back down from a challenge, Brady accepted and put on a show. We’ll have to wait to see if he can be just as successful on the field on Feb. 7.
