Seth Meyers: A Closer Look at Trump’s plan to steal the election
By Matt Moore
In A Closer Look, Seth Meyers warns that President Donald Trump could try to steal the election through the courts
Nobody in late night television has put President Donald Trump under the microscope more than Late Night with Seth Meyers. So it was only right that Monday’s “A Closer Look” examined President Trump and both the subtle and overt ways he’s looking to secure reelection.
To hear Meyers describe President Trump in “A Closer Look” is to hear arguments of corruption, immorality, incompetence, and abject failures. From the early days of President Trump’s harsh immigration policies through impeachment and now the pandemic, Meyers has never seen any indication of a willingness to govern or to act in the interest of the American people.
Instead, Meyers has laid out the case for how President Trump has enriched himself and his family while in office. And without facing any consequences, there is no reason to expect the president won’t do everything he can to ensure he remains in power.
Last night in “A Closer Look,” Late Night explained why it thinks President Trump has set himself up to potentially steal the election through the courts. Watch the segment right here:
Meyers can’t help but show some highlights from President Trump’s rally, reminding the Late Night audience of how truly bizarre the president can be when freewheeling in front of a microphone. Whether it is a rant about showers or Pavarotti, you have to give President Trump credit for always keeping his audience on their toes.
But what Meyers really wants to talk about is an Axios report indicating President Trump’s plan to prematurely declare victory in tonight’s election before all ballots are tallied.
A Closer Look calls out Team Trump for not openly trying to steal the election
There have been plenty of things going on behind the scenes or buried in the headlines that have been a cause for alarm during the Trump administration. “A Closer Look” has tried to expose some of these subjects and usually has done so quite effectively.
But on the issue of potentially stealing the election, Seth Meyers notes how openly Team Trump is operating. The Late Night host calls it a case of “saying the quiet part out loud” as efforts have been underway to throw out ballots or make it as difficult as possible to vote.
If President Trump decides to declare himself the winner before votes are finalized, things could slide into chaos. Meyers warns news outlets not to buy into the president’s version of reality by ignoring any premature declaration of victory.
For Meyers, it’s the only way to combat a president and his allies that know the popular vote won’t be in their favor. Meyers argues that President Trump has left the country in “tatters” and has nothing of substance to run on and has therefore resorted to sowing fear and discord. It’s a plan that is playing out in the open and one that cannot be allowed to stand, says Meyers.
We’ll find out tonight if these predictions come true or not. In the meantime, let us know what you thought of this installment of “A Closer Look” in the comment section below.
