John Oliver made his case against President Donald Trump’s stance on asylum

Immigration is always a major topic during any election. The controversial opinions and policies of President Donald Trump on the subject make it even more so just weeks away from the 2020 election. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took the opportunity to once again condemn the Trump administration over immigration, this time as it relates to asylum.

John Oliver has spent a number of segments exploring the myths about immigration, the legal and humanitarian aspects, and the Trump administration’s repeated efforts to curb the number of people entering the United States. In every instance, Last Week Tonight has argued that the current White House acts in direct contradiction to what the U.S. has traditionally stood for when it comes to immigration.

Asylum has been of particular interest to the Trump administration. It has called the process the biggest loophole in the U.S. immigration process. President Trump routinely rails against asylum and asylum seekers during his rallies, press conferences, and debates.

Last night on Last Week Tonight, John Oliver offered a condensed but effective explanation of the asylum process. He then went on the attack, calling the Trump administration’s asylum policy “truly evil” before offering insight on how things can change for the better.

John Oliver acknowledges that the asylum process has never been easy. He notes that less than half of the cases are granted and that there is too much gray area that allows for claims to be dismissed. However, as he has argued time and time again, Oliver says that the Trump administration took a broken system and made it much worse.

John Oliver warns that the White House’s asylum policy is flying under the radar

With the pandemic still raging, a new Supreme Court justice about to be added, and the election just weeks away, it is hard to focus on anything else right now. But Oliver warns that the White House is using this to its advantage, quietly changing policies and instituting new ones.

The Last Week Tonight host knows that “family separation” makes headlines but he goes deeper into what he considers even crueler practices. For Oliver, these including forcing asylum seekers to wait, rerouting migrants to other countries, and expelling or denying asylum seekers under the guise of a public health crisis. He highlights how these are widely reported or discussed, meaning many Americans are likely unaware of exactly what is going on at the border.

Oliver’s advice on improving this crisis is to vote for former Vice President Joe Biden. The host knows it won’t solve everything that’s wrong with immigration and asylum but he makes the case for why it can reverse some of the damage done by the current administration.
