Stephen Colbert noticed some inconsistencies in President Donald Trump’s comments about his COVID-19 treatment

According to the White House, President Donald Trump is all but cured of COVID-19. He’s already planning his next rally after returning to the Oval Office just days after being discharged from the hospital. In trying to follow just how President Trump was treated with COVID-19, Stephen Colbert ended up with more questions than answers.

President Trump has used his Twitter account to update the nation on his health. In tweets and videos, the president has touted the drugs and steroids he took as miracle cures. He has tried to turn the world-class medical treatment he received into proof that COVID-19 is nothing to fear and life can go on as normal.

Those tweets along with President Trump’s recent Fox News interview were worth investigating, says Stephen Colbert. His Late Show monologue on Thursday night attempted to follow the story on President Trump taking experimental drugs to treat the novel coronavirus.

Not surprisingly, Colbert quickly found himself lost when trying to follow the White House’s lead. Watch his monologue below and see if you can figure it out along with the Late Show host:

Stephen Colbert calls out President Trump’s hypocrisy on COVID-19 treatments

In his Fox News interview, President Trump flip-flopped repeatedly while trying to once again downplay the novel coronavirus. He stated that he didn’t need any medicine and that the virus would have gone away on its own. He followed that up by praising the miracle cure he was given that “beat the hell” out of COVID-19.

It’s easy to see why Stephen Colbert couldn’t keep up with a story that changed from sentence to sentence:

"So these drugs are great, but he doesn’t need them, but they cured him right away, but he’s going to fast track them, but he would have been fine without them so he’s not taking them. Why is it that he took the experimental drug and we’re the ones experiencing dizziness, confusion, and nausea?"

Colbert isn’t surprised to hear President Trump taking both sides and ultimately saying nothing to provide any real information. Throughout the pandemic, The Late Show has documented President Trump’s promises about how COVID-19 will both disappear and be wiped out thanks to a rapidly developed vaccine under the Trump administration.

President Trump contracting the novel coronavirus was going to be what finally got everything to click at the White House and for the pandemic to be taken seriously. At least that was Colbert’s hope. Instead, Team Trump has doubled down even as the number of infections rises.
