Seth Meyers: A Closer Look at Trump’s debate debacle
By Matt Moore
Late Night with Seth Meyers took A Closer Look at President Donald Trump’s behavior during the debate
The first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden was a mess. The candidates, their campaigns, and the media have tried to clean up the trainwreck, or at least make sense of it, but that has proven to be a near-impossible task. Seth Meyers gave it his best shot last night on Late Night, using “A Closer Look” to examine President Trump’s performance.
The debate was marked by constant interruptions by President Trump. This may have been part strategy, part psychology as the president looked to disrupt his opponent’s answers while also being unable to resist controlling things.
In his live monologue following the debate, Stephen Colbert compared President Trump to “a giant baby.” Seth Meyers said more or less the same thing but in just a different way in “A Closer Look.”
You can watch the segment below. Meyers calls the debate an “embarrassing debacle” in which the president debased himself only to have his loyal followers try to make excuses.
Clearly, Seth Meyers and the writers behind “A Closer Look” couldn’t decide on just one absurd comparison for the debate. Instead, Meyers rattles off a handful that made CNN’s Dana Bash’s comments sound like praise.
Meyers echoes what so many other people said about the debate. The Late Night host describes it as an embarrassment, a debacle, and a detriment to democracy. And we still have two more debates left to go.
A Closer Look attacks President Trump as well as his allies
Before and after the debate, Team Trump was out in full force trying to control the narrative while spreading some questionable theories. Jimmy Kimmel was among those who then came to Vice President Biden’s defense against PED accusations by former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani.
But nobody in late-night television covers Guiliani quite like Late Night with Seth Meyers. It’s always entertaining when “A Closer Look” has an excuse to go after President Trump’s personal lawyer or a ranting and raving lunatic as Meyers describes him.
It was another example of the “deranged petulance” within the Republican Party and conservative movement, argued Meyers. It was on full display with President Trump constantly interrupting Vice President Biden and having to be corralled by moderator Chris Wallace.
When it came time to talk about policy or an actual plan for the country, Meyers didn’t see the “apex predator” or “warrior” described by Team Trump on Fox News. Instead, the Late Night host saw more proof of why he says President Trump is unfit for office.
