Seth Meyers took A Closer Look at President Trump’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transition of power

President Donald Trump’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transition of power if he loses the election sent shockwaves around the country. Last night on Late Night‘s “A Closer Look,” Seth Meyers called it one of the most chilling moments of President Trump’s tenure.

President Trump has a long history of statements that have rarely, if ever, been said by a sitting president. His support of foreign dictators and efforts to undermine the intelligence community and elections have been repeatedly condemned. His latest comments on a peaceful transition of power were received as his most outrageous to date.

Seth Meyers has been documenting the low points and subversion of law by President Trump better than anyone in late-night. Just days after calling President Trump’s comments blaming blue states for COVID-19 dates as the most “grotesque” statement of the past four years, Meyers has now seen one of the “most chilling moments” of the Trump presidency.

In “A Closer Look,” Meyers examined the ramifications of President Trump’s statement and what it means for the upcoming election. The Late Night host also discussed the Republican plan to steal the election using the courts.

A Closer Look argues that President Trump is working to destroy democracy

Chronicling the death of democracy isn’t exactly your traditional late-night television content. But Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, and others have rewritten the rules on what a late-night show can be, especially in the Donald Trump era.

So between jokes about British accents, Bernie Sanders on Zoom, and Kevin Federline, Meyers delivers a very real warning about President Trump and the danger he presents to the rule of law.

Meyers again focuses on President Trump’s effort to delegitimize mail-in ballots and set the stage for a court battle if he loses to former Vice President Joe Biden. And once again, “A Closer Look” reminds viewers that the GOP is complicit in this scheme.

The Late Night host argues that constitutional crises have been happening throughout the past four years, pushing back against Senator Ted Cruz and others concerned about a contested election.

Meyers argues that President Trump’s attack on democracy began long before his campaign against mail-in ballots. Those attacks will only ramp up as we reach the election and could extend beyond that if Donald Trump loses.
