Late-night TV returns with another week of brand new shows and must-see guests

It’s all hands on deck this week in late-night TV. Shows across the board are back with brand new episodes and feature guests that fans won’t want to miss.

The summer of vacations, breaks, and hiatuses seems to be officially over. Jimmy Kimmel is back tonight after taking a prolonged break. Other fan-favorites like Late Night with Seth Meyers and Conan are back as well, having moved from remote locations back to studios and theaters.

We’re still not at the point where these late-night TV hosts can interview their guests in person or in front of a full studio audience. But Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and the rest have figured out how to have conversations that are just as informative, entertaining, and engaging.

That job will be especially easy for late-night hosts this week considering the guest lineup that fans will see. Here are Last Night On’s picks for the five late-night TV guests to watch this week.

Late-night TV guest to watch: Lt. General H.R. McMaster

No week in late-night TV is complete without a politically-charged guest. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert doesn’t waste anytime when it welcomes Lt. General H.R. McMaster to the show on Monday, Sept. 21.

Lt. General McMaster served as National Security Adviser to President Donald Trump. However, a series of disagreements over foreign policy and an concerted effort among conservative pundits and some inside the White House led to his dismissal in 2018.

Colbert will no doubt ask Lt. General McMaster about his time in the Trump administration, national security threats past and present, and his new memoir. Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World is set to be released this week.

Late-night TV guest to watch: Keira Knightley

One of late-night TV’s best guests comes to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week. Catch Keira Knightley on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Knightley will be promoting her film Misbehaviour. It released in Great Britain back in March but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its worldwide release. That changes on Sept. 25 when the comedy-drama arrives in American theaters.

The actress almost always has something entertaining to say or is willing to play along with a game or bit on The Tonight Show. Expect more of the same on Tuesday night even though Knightley won’t be in 30 Rock.

Late-night TV guest to watch: Michelle Obama

One of the most popular people in the country will be on late-night TV this week. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will be on Conan on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Obama and O’Brien have a history of working together. They came together to help military families and they’ve appeared on each other’s respective podcasts.

On Conan this Wednesday, the topic will be voter registration. Obama will be one day removed from her Instagram Live takeover, an event in which she and celebrity guests will encourage Americans to register to vote ahead of the Nov. election.

Late-night TV guest to watch: Chris Rock

Chris Rock makes his return to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week. You can see the comedian on Thursday, Sept. 24.

It will be impossible for Jimmy Fallon and Rock not to address the controversy involving them both that came to light earlier this year. Fallon was heavily criticized for an old Saturday Night Live sketch in which he impersonated Rock and appeared in blackface.

For his part, Rock recently said that he was not offended by the sketch because he knows Fallon and it was not done from a place of malice. Expect a brief conversation about the controversy before things move on to Rock’s role in the upcoming season of Fargo.

Late-night TV guest to watch: Norman Reedus

The Walking Dead fans will want to catch Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday, Sept. 24. That’s when Norman Reedus will be the top guest.

It was recently announced that The Walking Dead will conclude after season 11. Reedus will continue fighting zombies in a spin-off based on his character Daryl and Carol, played by Melissa McBride. In more good news for Reedus, he launched a production company and agreed to a first-look deal with AMC.

Reedus may have a some hints to drop about the future of The Walking Dead and his role(s). Regardless, fans are in for an entertaining conversation between the actor and Kimmel no matter the topic.
