Late-night TV schedule: Who’s on, who’s off this week – August 31
By Matt Moore
What is late-night TV’s schedule for this week?
It’s Monday, Aug. 31 and that means we’ve reached a beginning and an end. It’s the start of a fresh work week but the end of the month. For many, it also means one last chance to fit in a vacation before the unofficial end of summer despite everything going on. As fans will find out this week, the same goes for late-night TV.
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver made sure things got off to a good start last night with a new episode. However, the show also announced that it will be on hiatus until Sept. 27.
So now the attention turns to the daily late-night shows. We’re coming off another interesting week that saw The Late Show with Stephen Colbert go live after each night of the Republican National Convention and Jimmy Kimmel Live! continued to rely on guest hosts.
Meanwhile, shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and Conan were on hiatus. Late Night is preparing to become the latest late-night show to return to the studio, so a much-deserved break was in order.
What should fans expect this week? A return to normal or more repeats? Here’s a breakdown of this week’s late-night TV schedule.
This week’s late-night TV schedule on ABC
Jimmy Kimmel isn’t quite done with his summer vacation yet. The late-night host also has the virtual Emmy’s to host on Sept. 20. And like Kimmel himself, Jimmy Kimmel Live! is on vacation this week, too.
Last week saw the return of David Spade to late-night as he filled in for Kimmel. He was followed by Jason Derulo and Lil Rel Howery. But rather than call in another group of guest hosts, the ABC show will air a week of reruns.
Fans can rewatch episodes hosted by Kerry Washington, Anthony Anderson, Ben Platt, Derulo, and Howery this week. Interview guests to check out include Zendaya on Tuesday, Sept. 1 and Reese Witherspoon on Thursday, Sept. 3.
This week’s late-night TV schedule on CBS
It is a big week for late-night TV fanatics on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Unfortunately, it just won’t come with any new episodes.
Instead, CBS is airing a week of Stephen Colbert’s interviews with his fellow late-night hosts. You can see Colbert with Conan O’Brien, Jon Stewart, and more all this week. Check out our preview right here for more details.
Things will be the same over on the other CBS late-night show. The Late Late Show with James Corden will also be airing a week of repeats.
The show only recently moved from James Corden’s garage back to its Los Angeles studio. Still, fans will have to wait at least another week for new content. Featured guests appearing in this week’s reruns include Niall Horan on Tuesday, Sept. 2 and Leslie Odom, Jr. on Friday, Sept. 4.
This week’s late-night TV schedule on NBC
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has been on a hot streak since it returned to 30 Rock. Jimmy Fallon’s monologues seem to have an extra bite to them and his interviews remain some of the best on late-night.
Unfortunately, fans won’t get anything new from Fallon this week. NBC’s late-night leader is also off this week.
Viewers can tune in to see some of Fallon’s recent interviews with some of the funniest people around. Adam DeVine, Michael Che, and Seth Meyers are all featured in interviews this week.
It’s the same story for Late Night with Seth Meyers. After wrapping up shows from “The Captain’s Quarters” last week, the show is on a break this week before it prepares to return to the studio.
Recommended episodes to rewatch this week include Tuesday, Sept. 1’s show featuring Jason Sudeikis and Wednesday, Sept. 2 with Paula Pell and John Lutz. Late Night will be back next week as Seth Meyers prepares for an exclusive interview with Michael Cohen.
The rest of late-night TV’s schedule this week
If Conan O’Brien is your favorite late-night TV host, then you’re in luck. Conan returns this week and saves late-night fans from a week of repeats.
It starts tonight when O’Brien interviews former Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudeikis. He’s out promoting his new Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso.
On Tuesday night, O’Brien will chat with JB Smoove. Smoove is featured in the new Quibi series Mapleworth Murders and always delivers a must-see appearance.
Then on Wednesday, comedian Rory Scovel is featured. He is set to launch “Dads the Podcast” from Team Coco’s podcast network and will make his first pitch to listeners on Conan.
Unfortunately, it’s a different story on Comedy Central. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah will be pre-empted with no new shows on the schedule.
