The Late Show with Stephen Colbert wrapped up coverage of the Republican National Convention

Nobody in late-night television was happier to reach the end of the workweek than Stephen ColbertThe Late Show grinded his way through four nights of live coverage on the Republican National Convention, an event he described as nonsense, boring, and soulless.

Colbert started the week by giving the impression he was looking forward to mocking the GOP with four nights of fresh material. He started the Late Show‘s week of live shows by comparing the Republican Party to a cult and giddily ridiculing the RNC speakers.

Things lost steam on night two when Eric Trump led what Colbert called a “slow and boring” night. Then the comedian outright boycotted night three in order to keep attention on the pandemic, the protests in Wisconsin, and the subsequent shooting of a protestor.

Thursday night was the grand finale. Colbert admitted that he did not watch most of the RNC but did tune in for the end. With President Donald Trump taking the stage to accept the Republican nomination for president, Colbert was ready with his reaction. He focused on the anger-filled night that was capped by the president and his supporters ignoring health protocols.

Stephen Colbert marveled at how President Donald Trump has not changed

As Stephen Colbert noted, it’s been a long five years. Covering Donald Trump night after night has not only taken its toll on Colbert but it has also changed The Late Show and all of late-night television. One thing that hasn’t changed over that time span is Donald Trump.

Colbert notes that President Trump looks relatively the same as he did in 2016. The comedian suggests this is what happens when the president doesn’t concern himself with the health and well-being of others. If he doesn’t stress about anything, then he won’t show any of the effects.

The Late Show monologue went on to discuss how President Trump’s message has not changed. His acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention continued to make promises about the pandemic, attack former Vice President Joe Biden as a radical, and portray the country as being on the brink of self-destruction. These are all talking points Colbert has heard before, making the speech another boring addition to an already boring event.

Colbert wrapped up the week with a look back at “four nights of nonsense from America’s top trashbags.” There are still burning questions about Donald Trump, Jr., Hatch Act violations, and why the GOP used footage of Spain to attack Joe Biden. Then again, these are all par for the course over the past five years so Colbert shouldn’t be surprised to see that nothing changed.
