Late Night with Seth Meyers: Is the end for the Sea Captain?
By Matt Moore
Changes are coming to Late Night with Seth Meyers
While other late-night television shows were downsizing and simplifying things, Late Night with Seth Meyers was expanding its on-screen talent. But with change on the horizon, have we reached the end of the public’s love/hate relationship with the Sea Captain?
Seth Meyers, like other hosts, has made the most of relocating from a studio to remote locations to film Late Night. First, it was in his attic, where a mysterious tiny door, a wasp infestation, and a copy of The Thorn Birds were all mined for comedy.
Then Meyers moved to his in-laws home and dubbed it “The Captain’s Quarters.” There, Late Night viewers were treated to Meyers’s new sidekick and “A Closer Look” co-host, the Sea Captain. The character quickly became a divisive figure with some fans begging for more banter between the Captain and Meyers while others raised concern for the host’s sanity.
Those in the latter group may be getting their wish. Late Night with Seth Meyers is wrapping up its final week of remote shows. It will then join its fellow NBC late-night program The Tonight Show by returning to the studio.
But Meyers isn’t ignoring the Sea Captain’s fans. Last night on Late Night, Meyers revealed that some fan mail had made its way to his in-law’s home, much to the comedian’s delight. If fans are willing to go that far, it could mean the Sea Captain has a future after all.
What is the Sea Captain’s future at Late Night with Seth Meyers?
Sidekicks have long been a staple in late-night television. Today, Conan has Andy Richter, Jimmy Kimmel Live! has Guillermo, and The Tonight Show has Steve Higgins. Late Night with Seth Meyers has used Fred Armisen to fill that role but he’s got a busy schedule and isn’t always in the studio.
Could the Sea Captain fill that role? Plenty of fans would love to see that happen. Check the comments on any Late Night YouTube clip or check Twitter and you’ll see fans begging Seth Meyers to bring the Captain with him back to 30 Rock.
Meyers seems inclined to do it. After all, it’s impossible to deny the chemistry the two have. And it was the Sea Captain that Meyers turned to when he needed help reviving “Really!?!” on Late Night.
But the Sea Captain also has some friends that may want to join the voyage back to New York City. There’s Ira, the Prospect Park duck, The fish who may have a drug problem, Ghost Lobster, and the sexy mermaid with the unsexy voice.
Fans have been trying to guess the voices behind each of these characters. Will Forte is definitely the Sea Captain and Fred Armisen is Ira. Andy Samberg is a lock for the fish with a drug problem. Any ideas for who gives voice to Ghost Lobster? Jason Sudeikis, perhaps. Or the mermaid? Rachel Dratch is one possibility. Or is it Kristen Wiig? Tell us your guesses in the comment section below. Hopefully, all will be revealed by the end of the week.
