Bill Maher should respond to Trump tonight on Real Time
By Matt Moore
Bill Maher may have something to say to President Trump
It was another eventful week for Bill Maher. And for the first time in a while, it wasn’t because of something controversial the comedian said on Real Time.
Maher found himself the target of one of President Donald Trump’s signature mean tweets. The Commander-in-Chief revealed that he watched an episode of Real Time with Bill Maher for the first time in a while, sharing a harsh review of Maher’s appearance.
The tweet was in response from Maher’s “New Rule” segment last week in which he delivered a mock eulogy for President Trump. In typical Maher fashion, he did not hold back in describing how history and the American people will remember the president.
Maher responded to President Trump’s attack with a tweet of his own. The Real Time host questioned why the president was spending his time worrying about late-night television shows.
With a brand new episode of Real Time tonight, Maher will have another chance to respond to President Trump. Now that Maher knows he has an audience at the White House, he can be even more direct in addressing the most powerful man in the world.
In terms of entertainment value, here’s hoping Maher decides to say something. He has the president between a rock and a hard place. On Real Time, Maher is free to say whatever he wants about the president. If President Trump responds again, Maher can criticize him for being concerned with a television host rather than say, the pandemic or election.
Bill Maher could follow the example set by other late-night hosts
This certainly wasn’t the first time that President Trump has shared his thoughts about Bill Maher. All you have to do is check Maher’s Twitter page to see a handful of quotes from the president calling Maher “crazy,” “wacky,” and “dumb.”
It is possible that Maher decides his tweet was enough and there is no use in engaging with President Trump. Real Time doesn’t need a feud with President Trump to pull in viewers. It can just keep doing what it has been doing and the president can act as the show’s PR by tweeting at Maher.
The past few months have seen an uptick in President Trump commenting about late-night television. Twice he has made it clear he watches The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. And before that, he had some feedback for Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
Both Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel took the high road, thanking the president for watching and not spending too much time milking it for comedy. There is a chance that Bill Maher does the same tonight. If more people tune in live hoping to hear Maher hit back, he can just use that extra viewership to make whatever commentary he wants.

Maher will interview Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and sports radio host Colin Cowherd. The panel will feature former Democratic presidential candidates Pete Buttigieg and Andrew Yang.
