President Trump attacks Bill Maher after Real Time eulogy
By Matt Moore
Real Time host Bill Maher was President Trump’s latest target on Twitter
If you happened to miss Real Time with Bill Maher over the weekend, you may want to catch up. It will help you understand why President Donald Trump took time on Wednesday morning to attack Bill Maher and reignite his feud with late-night television.
Just after 8:00 A.M., President Trump sent out a tweet aimed at Maher. The president called the comedian “terrible, exhausted, gaunt, and weak” as well as a “jerk.” The insults towards Maher from President Trump came in the middle of tweets about Senator Kamala Harris, his 96% approval rating in the Republican Party, and a prediction that suburban housewives would vote for him.
Clearly Maher did something that got under President Trump’s skin. And for anyone who watched Real Time on Aug. 7 can probably guess what got the president so upset.
Maher’s “New Rule” segment was a eulogy dedicated to President Trump. The comedian offered to give the president a preview of how he’ll be remembered and as you can imagine, it wasn’t a fond farewell.
President Trump adds Real Time with Bill Maher to the list of late-night shows he watches
Bill Maher has never been shy about sharing his thoughts on President Donald Trump. And being on HBO means that the Real Time host doesn’t have to filter himself the same way other late-night hosts do. So with that, we get quotes like this from Maher on no one wanting President Trump at their funeral:
"He’s the president and people still don’t want him there. That’s like a children’s hospital turning down Batman. What kind of spectacular prick do you have to be that everyone’s last request is: ‘Make sure that a–hole isn’t at my funeral.’"
The only thing worse than no one wanting you at their funeral is if no one wants to show up to yours. Maher can’t imagine anyone having words of reverence when President Trump passes. And while the Real Time host only wishes good health for the president, his eulogy was meant to be educational for President Trump.
President Trump didn’t return those well-wishes in his tweet. He questioned Maher’s health and suggested that it was time for the comedian to get off the air.
The president’s tweet also indicated that he watched Real Time with Bill Maher. It comes just a few weeks after he revealed that he had watched an episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
In the past, we’ve looked at how presidents responded to being parodied on Saturday Night Live. None have taken as much offense as President Trump. And his latest attack on Bill Maher can be added to an ongoing list of President Trump’s reviews of late-night hosts.
President Trump did exactly what Bill Maher wanted him to do. He watched the “New Rule” segment on Real Time and he reacted. It wasn’t exactly the epiphany that Maher hoped the eulogy would inspire but it certainly helped bring more attention to Maher’s show.
There is a good chance that Bill Maher will want to respond to his newest fan on the next episode of Real Time. Stay tuned.
