The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is taking a step towards normal
Things are changing once again at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Late-night television’s top show will have a new look when it returns next week as the pandemic continues to affect production.
Since March, The Late Show has been filmed at Stephen Colbert’s home. His wife, children, and dog have acted as the in-studio crew to help get the show on the air. The real Late Show staff and crew have been working remotely to coordinate interviews, add graphics, and give audiences the best viewing experience as possible.
Colbert is currently at the end of a two-week hiatus. When The Late Show does return with a new episode on Aug. 10, it won’t be from the Colbert household. But it also won’t be from its typical location in the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City.
Instead, a different location will be used to house The Late Show. According to Colbert, he will no longer sleep where he films but a full return to the familiar set doesn’t sound like it is in the plans.
A story from Deadline offers some more insight into The Late Show‘s plans. During an earnings call, ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish indicated that both The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Late Late Show with James Corden would be “returning to their buildings” but with no audience.
It is possible that The Late Show will use a smaller space than the Ed Sullivan Theater when it comes back with new episodes. Fans can expect Colbert to be joined by a smaller crew and perhaps bandleader Jon Batiste.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert joins other late-night shows in leaving home
Like the rest of the world, late-night television has looked very different over the past few months. Stephen Colbert certainly wasn’t the only host to broadcast from home and it isn’t the first to leave.
Conan O’Brien got the ball rolling when Conan moved from his home to the Largo theatre in Los Angeles. Interviews were still conducted remotely but O’Brien was joined by a small crew, his assistant Sona Movsesian, and sidekick Andy Richter.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon then followed. NBC opened up the 30 Rock studio to Jimmy Fallon, the Roots, and a skeleton crew. The return was a sign of how far New York City has come after once being the epicenter of the pandemic in the U.S.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! has also looked different over the past month. Jimmy Kimmel announced his summer vacation, meaning a rotating cast of guest hosts were filling in. Rather than move production from house to house, the ABC late-night show rented out a house to film hosts like Billy Eichner, George Lopez, and Nikki Glaser.
Now it is time for the CBS duo of Colbert and James Corden to get back to “normal” in some way or another. After months of doing the show from home, a change of scenery may provide a shot in the arm to both shows.
