Is Real Time with Bill Maher new tonight, August 7?
By Matt Moore
What should Real Time with Bill Maher fans expect to see tonight?
Gaffes by both presidential candidates. A ban on TikTok. The ongoing pandemic. Another busy week has come to an end and late-night television fans will want to turn to Real Time with Bill Maher for a reaction.
Late-night television options have been relatively limited this week. But the lack in quantity has been answered with quality episodes from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
The NBC duo has been taking on everything from the world of President Donald Trump this week. That includes the disastrous interview with Jonathan Swan of Axios for HBO as well as revelations that the president may be under investigation for fraud.
Real Time with Bill Maher returned from its summer hiatus at just the right time last week. Bill Maher immediately jumped into the pandemic discussion, calling on the media to help confront the obesity pandemic that is exacerbating the effects of COVID-19.
So what should Real Time fans expect to see tonight? A brand new episode, that’s what. Season 18 continues tonight. Keep reading for a breakdown of tonight’s guest lineup.
Here’s who will be interviewed tonight on Real Time with Bill Maher
Bill Maher’s first interview will be with a frequent Real Time guest. Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson joins the show for the seventh time.
Col. Wilkerson is currently a visiting professor at the College of William and Mary. He served as chief of staff to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell during the administration of President George W. Bush.
Regarding the current administration, Col. Wilkerson has been, at best, skeptical of President Donald Trump’s foreign policy and especially how it pertains to Iran. The retired colonel has also called for President Trump’s impeachment in the past.
Col. Wilkerson is part of a bipartisan group that has gamed out what would happen if President Trump refused to hand over power. It is a scenario Maher has warned his audience about in the past. It should make for an interesting conversation on tonight’s show.
There will also be a first-time guest interviewed tonight. Actor Chris Evans makes his Real Time with Bill Maher debut.
Evans is known for his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as for his work in films like Knives Out and Snowpiercer. Evans is also the co-founder of A Starting Point, a platform to help elected officials better connect with the public.
Expect Maher and Evans to discuss what made the actor decide to get involved in civic engagement. The two will likely also share thoughts on political activism among celebrities.
Here is the panel for tonight’s Real Time with Bill Maher
Tonight’s panel features a first-time guest and a returning guest. Both should have a lot to say when they join Bill Maher.
Meghan Daum checks in for her Real Time debut. She hosts the podcast “The Unspeakable” in which she interviews journalists, entertainers, and anyone else she finds interesting about challenging moral assumptions. Daum is also the author of The Problem with Everything: My Journey Through the New Culture Wars. The book covers everything from the Trump administration to the #MeToo movement to identity politics.
With Bill Maher, Daum could comment on how the “culture wars” will impact the 2020 election and what life will look like on the other side, regardless of who wins.
Returning to Real Time to join the panel is Paul Begala. This will be the author and political commentator’s 13th time on the show. Begala worked on President Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign and partnered with strategist James Carville. His latest book is You’re Fired: The Perfect Guide to Beating Donald Trump.
On tonight’s panel, Begala should share some insights from his book and his political career. He can offer some ideas on how former Vice President Joe Biden can defeat President Trump with less than 100 days until the election.
