Seth Meyers took A Closer Look at President Trump’s latest coronavirus claims

Making predictions can be risky business especially when those predictions are turned into promises. A streak of bad predictions and broken promises on the novel coronavirus pandemic hasn’t stopped President Donald Trump from doubling down. Seth Meyers explained during “A Closer Look” on Thursday’s Late Night.

Predicting election outcomes and promising massive crowd sizes are one thing but President Trump has tried to apply the same salesmanship to the pandemic. Predictions that cases would go from 15 to zero or that COVID-19 would disappear with warm weather have been paired with promises of economic recovery by Easter and miracle cures like hydroxychloroquine.

As Seth Meyers has pointed out time and time again, the president’s remarks often contradict those of medical experts. The Late Night host has cited it as another reason why electing a reality television personality as president wasn’t ideal.

But President Trump continues to say that the novel coronavirus will “disappear.” This comes even as he comes under investigation for possible fraud. It all adds up to something worthy of “A Closer Look” from Late Night with Seth Meyers.

A Closer Look calls Trump’s coronavirus predictions wrong and dangerous

Given everything else that it is going on, it isn’t unreasonable to think that many people missed the news that opens up “A Closer Look.” Filings by a New York City district attorney suggest that President Trump is the subject of a bank and insurance fraud investigation. This comes just after it was reported that Deutsche Bank cooperated with a subpoena as part of an investigation into the president’s business dealings.

It doesn’t look good for Donald Trump and it only gives him more incentive to win reelection. Meyers argues that to keep attention away from these criminal investigations and the administration’s failings, President Trump is making promises about the pandemic.

Helping him along the way once again was Fox News. In a previous edition of “A Closer Look,” Meyers discussed how Fox News was a safe space for the president after his disastrous Axios interview. It was on Fox that President Trump once again shared his prediction that COVID-19 would go away.

Meyers concludes by reminding his audience that Fox News is part of the larger system that helped create President Donald Trump. The Late Night host once again condemns the conservative political movement by noting that, like the novel coronavirus, it won’t simply go away but requires fundamental change and a strategy to defeat it.
