Seth Meyers took A Closer Look at President Trump running back to Fox News

Failure or embarrassment can be a great motivator to return to a familiar, safe place where a bruised ego can be massaged. According to Seth Meyers in “A Closer Look,” that is exactly what President Donald Trump did by returning to Fox News after a trainwreck interview with Axios.

By now, tens of millions of people have seen President Trump’s interview with journalist Jonathan Swan for Axios that aired on HBO. Swan’s confused looks as he followed the president’s logic and his use of follow-up questions to derail the president’s tangents helped make the interview go viral.

Late-night television made sure to have some fun at President Trump’s expense. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon imagined what deleted footage from the interview would look like, finding comedy in what appeared to be beyond parody.

So with millions laughing at him, what did President Trump do? He returned to the comforts of Fox News for a new interview. Seth Meyers shared his thoughts on the situation during “A Closer Look” on Wednesday night, saying it was the president’s only option after the disastrous Axios interview.

A Closer Look argues Trump can hide from his mistakes at Fox News

Seth Meyers points out that it has been a difficult week for President Donald Trump even beyond his Axios interview. The 30-minute conversation with Jonathan Swan gave people like the Late Night host plenty of material to work through. But while the Axios debacle was still fresh in people’s minds, President Trump followed it up by botching “Yosemite” and demonstrating no awareness of what TikTok is even as he tries to ban it.

These kinds of gaffes become more prominent when President Trump steps outside of his “right-wing” bubble, says Meyers. And nobody takes up more space within that bubble than Fox News. So that’s why an embarrassed President Trump called in to chat with Lou Dobbs and Fox and Friends to do damage control after the Axios interview.

Meyers calls out Dobbs for his softball questions and then reveals that even the president’s allies in conservative media know the Axios interview was a mistake. “A Closer Look” describes it as a rare gamble for President Trump to go outside the familiar confines of conservative media. And it was one which clearly did not pay off for the president.
