Saturday Night Live season 45: Best of Chris Redd
By Matt Moore
Looking back at Chris Redd’s performance in season 45 of Saturday Night Live
Season 45 was a big one for Chris Redd. The Saturday Night Live cast member was promoted from featured play to preparatory player and quickly proved it was a wise decision.
Comedy fans need to get used to hearing Redd’s name. It was recently announced that he was added to SNL co-star Kenan Thompsons’ upcoming NBC sitcom Kenan. Redd will play Thompson’s brother in what will be another high-profile role.
It was then announced that Redd would be getting an hour-long stand-up special on HBO Max. The special will be produced as part of the streaming service’s partnership with Conan O’Brien and Team Coco.
If you have been paying attention to Saturday Night Live the past few years, then it is no surprise to see Chris Redd getting more opportunities to show off his talents. His celebrity impressions and song parodies have made him a valuable contributor at Studio 8H and demonstrated his versatility as a performer.
Chris Redd’s three best sketches from Saturday Night Live season 45
Saturday Night Live fans know that few cast members can pull off the reaction shot quite like Chris Redd. And Redd has also secured himself a spot among SNL’s best sketches for playing the straight man in John Mulaney’s musical trilogy, capped off by “Airport Sushi” in season 45.
But this season also gave Redd a chance to show off what else he can do. Perhaps that was best represented in the pretaped sketch “That’s the Game” from the Harry Styles episode.
Redd also got a chance to shine at the “Weekend Update” desk this season. Coming on as a version of himself, Redd proved that he deserves more solo time to do his thing in the future.
Redd’s jokes at the “Update” desk are also a nice preview for any fans looking to see more of Redd outside of Saturday Night Live. His HBO Max stand-up special will definitely appeal to fans who appreciated his work this season.
Another area in which Chris Redd has been able to shine is with his musical talents. Redd has taken the rap comedy mantle at Saturday Night Live from The Lonely Island boys and run with it.
Whether it is parodying Migos or begging for President Barack Obama to come back, Redd has become a must-listen when he gets behind the microphone. “On the Couch” featuring Kenan Thompson and the Weeknd was a great example from season 45.
Chris Redd should come back even better in season 46. If some big names decide to walk away from the show, that could mean even more opportunities for Redd and especially at the “Weekend Update” desk. Stay tuned.
