Late night TV roasts Ivanka Trump over Goya beans photo
By Matt Moore
Late night comedians had a lot of fun at Ivanka Trump’s expense
When the history of President Donald Trump’s administration is written, there will be a section bout Goya beans. Because why not? In the latest bizarre scene to come from the White House, President Trump and his daughter Ivanka Trump posed with cans of beans and in the process gave late night television a lot to talk about.
The black bean photoshoots come after Robert Unanue, chief executive officer of Goya Foods, voiced his support of President Trump during a White House event. That led the president’s critics to call for a boycott of Goya goods and in turn, a show of support from Team Trump.
President Trump posted a photo of himself posing in the Oval Office with a variety of Goya goods and giving his signature thumbs up. The Instagram post came a day after Ivanka Trump took to Twitter to share her endorsement of Goya.
Ivanka Trump’s tweet was mocked, criticized, and called illegal by those citing laws prohibiting White House officials from endorsing products. Whether or not she will face any consequences remains to be seen. But in the immediate aftermath, Trump found herself a target for late night comedians.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert gave Ivanka Trump her own ad
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert typically spends its time going after President Trump and his Republican supporters. But Ivanka Trump’s beans tweet was too good to pass up and the Late Show team delivered with this mock ad for the president’s daughter and adviser.
Is it the most mature or high-brow piece of comedy every produced by Stephen Colbert? No, not by a long shot. However, the absurdity of the bit matches the absurdity of Ivanka Trump posing with a can of beans to make a political statement.
Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers mocked Ivanka Trump’s pose
Given everything that President Trump has said about Mexico and Mexicans, Jimmy Fallon found it curious that Ivanka Trump decided to add Spanish to her tweet. The Goya beans photo is reminiscent of President Trump’s infamous taco bowl tweet.
Fallon’s political joke was followed up by a jab at Ivanka Trump’s Price Is Right-like pose. Everything about the picture seems unnatural, which only made it easier for Fallon and others to ridicule it.
Seth Meyers echoed Fallon by also calling out Ivanka Trump’s odd appearance. The Late Night host also joked that it was the hardest Trump has worked in her life.
The Daily Show compared Ivanka Trump to an Instagram influencer
Trevor Noah opened up The Daily Show‘s segment on Ivanka Trump’s photo by calling her “winner of Take Your Daughter to Work Day.” That set the stage for how Noah was going to approach the story and perfectly sums up late night television’s perception of Trump.
Noah isn’t shocked that the Trumps violated an ethics law. Instead, he’s shocked that ethics laws still exist. Endorsing Goya from the White House is far down the list of egregious actions by the Trump administration so this won’t be the bean that breaks the camel’s back and brings accountability to Team Trump. But it is at the top of the list when it comes to the most ridiculous moments of the past four years.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert may have gone with the low hanging fruit for its bit. But it gets Last Night On’s pick for the best coverage of this story. The Daily Show comes in a close second if only for coining the term “Beanghazi.”
