Stephen Colbert called out Republicans afraid of upsetting President Donald Trump

If there is anything President Donald Trump likes more than loyalty, it’s a big crowd size. But when it comes to the upcoming Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida, both are looking questionable. Stephen Colbert explained why during Tuesday’s Late Show monologue.

President Trump made a big deal out of relocating the GOP convention from its original location in Charlotte, North Carolina. When officials there refused to back off of their social distancing measures, President Trump effectively took his ball and went home. Rather than have a smaller crowd, the president had the event relocated to Jacksonville.

But now Florida has become the U.S. epicenter for the novel coronavirus epidemic. The state has set multiple records for single-day cases. It is hard to imagine the state will be ready to host the Aug. convention given the way things are trending

Now reports indicate that members of President Trump’s party are looking to back out of attending the convention. It’s a smart decision given the circumstances but that doesn’t play well with the president. Republican excuses were the subject of Stephen Colbert’s monologue as the Late Show host seemed to enjoy the debacle playing out in the GOP.

Stephen Colbert sees the Republican National Convention as a disaster waiting to happen

It is not often that Stephen Colbert agrees with members of the Republican Party these days. But he can’t blame lawmakers like Senator Chuck Grassley and Senator Pat Roberts from avoiding Jacksonville especially given their age. The fact that they can’t come right out and say that is what Colbert finds so amusing.

Holding the Republican National Convention at all puzzles Colbert. Factor in the plan to use cruise ships as lodging and an auditorium full of people without masks and it sounds like a recipe for disaster to Colbert.

The alternatives don’t sound any better. The other options are to either A. deal with the risk of becoming infected or B. hold the convention outdoors. Neither sounds appealing to Colbert and once again he seems to be enjoying watching the GOP and Trump White House flail.

After his Tulsa, Oklahoma rally didn’t deliver the crowd size he wanted and his Portsmouth, New Hampshire rally was canceled, President Trump is desperate to get in front of a large, raucous crowd. The Republican National Convention was supposed to be a massive celebration of all things MAGA. But with the health risks and GOP lawmakers declining to attend, it’s shaping up to be another disaster.
