Stephen Colbert reacted to President Donald Trump commuting Roger Stone’s sentence

Throughout his Late Show tenure, Stephen Colbert has expressed shock but not surprise by the actions of President Donald Trump. The latest example came after the president commuted the sentence of his longtime friend and associate Roger Stone.

Stone was convicted of witness tampering and lying to investigators in 2019 as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. He was sentenced to 40 months in prison before President Trump stepped in and commuted Stone’s sentence.

When news broke, Late Show fans knew that Stephen Colbert would have something to say when he returned to the air on Monday night. After all, Colbert has a long history of ridiculing Stone and covering the twists and turns of his story.

Colbert didn’t disappoint. His monologue on Monday night took aim at Roger Stone and used it to once again condemn the actions of President Trump.

Stephen Colbert called out Republicans for not opposing Roger Stone’s commuted sentence

As happy as Colbert was to see justice served in Roger Stone’s case, the Late Show host always knew that a pardon or commutation was a possibility. President Trump repeatedly spoke out against the charges against Stone and Stone made it clear he was going to protect the president.

But Colbert may have been holding out hope that someone inside the Republican Party would speak out against the political favor. Yet beyond Senator Mitt Romney, nobody from the GOP was willing to push back against the president. It’s another example of a serious issue that late night hosts and others see with the current Republican Party.

Colbert calls it an abuse of power and in the process, gives up any hope that accountability will come to the Trump administration while its in power. It doesn’t keep Colbert from speaking out or calling out corruption when he sees it. But it’s hard not to sense a little feeling of defeat in the Late Show host following the deafening silence from those around President Trump.
