2. A Closer Look at Bernie Sanders and the media

2020 started off with about 20 candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for president. It was a simpler time and certainly the kind of topic that Seth Meyers would rather be covering in “A Closer Look.”

In Feb., it was clear that Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ popularity in 2016 wasn’t a fluke. He was making a strong push to the top of the Democratic field and many were predicted a Sanders vs. Trump showdown.

However, not everyone was feeling the Bern. Some establishment Democrats expressed caution and the media certainly seemed uninterested in giving Senator Sanders the attention he deserved. Here Meyers tried to understand why there was such a panic over the idea of President Bernie Sanders.

The segment proved that Late Night doesn’t just go after Fox News. CNN and MSNBC are among those networks that get called out by Meyers. It also showed that even if “A Closer Look” turns away from President Donald Trump, it can still be the most insightful and thought-provoking segment in late night television.

We all know how things turned out in the Democratic race. The media won’t have to cover a Sanders presidency, proving the panic was all for nothing. But seeing the state of things just a few months later, the idea of President Sanders may not seem like such a bad idea after all.
