Saturday Night Live season 45’s best cameos – 3. Jake Gyllenhaal

When it was announced that John Mulaney was returning to host Saturday Night Live for the third time, fans knew what was coming. Mulaney was the brains behind two of the more memorable sketches in recent history with “Diner Lobster” and “Bodega Bathroom.”

Mulaney completed his musical trilogy in Feb. with “Airport Sushi,” another parody of both New York City life and Broadway musicals. To mark the occasion, the sketch received a major boost from a surprise appearance by Jake Gyllenhaal as “The Guy Who Always Travels in Pajamas.”

Die-hard John Mulaney fans may not have been as surprised as the rest of the SNL audience to see Gyllenhaal come on stage. The talented actor also had a role in John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch on Netflix that premiered shortly before the episode.

Gyllenhaal delivers a hilarious version of “Defying Gravity” from the play Wicked. The actor seems just as comfortable singing and flying across stage as a guy traveling in his pajamas.

If Mulaney looks to do a fourth musical parody the next time he hosts SNL, it will be hard to top “Airport Sushi.” He may have set a precedent for surprise appearances by including Jake Gyllenhaal, too so stay tuned.
