Stephen Colbert addressed President Donald Trump’s tweets about social distancing protests around the country.

Stephen Colbert knows one thing about President Donald Trump: he loves a big, chanting mob. The late night host now says that since President Trump can’t hold his signature rallies, he’s encouraging mobs via Twitter.

That is how Colbert described those gathering to protest stay-at-home orders and social distancing instructions across the country. A number of people are eager to get life back to normal as soon as possible despite the advice of medical experts or government guidelines.

President Trump could be counted among those getting restless. His press briefings have made it clear that he wants to “reopen” the country even though others have encouraged a more cautious, patient approach.

So with that in mind, it wasn’t all that surprising to see President Trump tweeting out his support of protests. Still, Stephen Colbert couldn’t help but respond in typical fashion on Monday night’s episode of The Late Show.

As best as Stephen Colbert can understand the situation, President Trump is encouraging his supporters to violate his own recommendations. The only explanation the comedian can offer for this contradiction is that President Trump is desperate to hearing a chanting mob.

“Cabin fever” and feeling stir crazy is understandable while quarantining. But most people have pointed out that it is a necessary sacrifice for the greater good. Yet according to Colbert, President Trump supporters spreading actual fevers as a cure for cabin fever.

The Late Show makes it clear that President Trump’s priorities remain askew, to say the least. Colbert’s monologue goes on to rip White House press briefings dedicated to praising President Trump regardless of the facts.
