Conan O’Brien celebrates Leap Day in classic Late Night sketch
By Matt Moore
Celebrate Leap Day with a classic sketch from Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
Leap Day only comes once every four years, so why not celebrate it? That seemed to be the rationale back in 2008 when Late Night with Conan O’Brien introduced the world to Leap-A-Licious.
“Conan Classic,” the online archive of everything Conan O’Brien has done in late night television, continues to get updated. Last Night On has already looked back at the top ten remote pieces in O’Brien’s career. And now, fans can see more celebrity interviews and bits dating back to the Late Night days.
Fans can search for just about anything on “Conan Classic” and find a sketch or interview that matches. When you’ve been doing a nightly comedy show since 1993, then chances are you’ve made a joke about everything and anything imaginable.
That is the case for Leap Day, too. The rare appearance of Feb. 29 on the calendar is trending around the world. Back in 2008, O’Brien took time out of his show to mark the special occasion but the “celebration” quickly got out of hand.
For comedy fans of a certain age, Late Night with Conan O’Brien played a major role in developing their sense of humor. Sketches like this, which at its core is stupid in the best possible way, are an excellent example of why O’Brien has some of the most intensely loyal fans in all of television.
And just when you think you get the joke of the over-enthusiastic voice-over guy, the sketch finds another gear. O’Brien gets called out for failing to mention Black History Month and only looks worse when the Leap Day guy is also an expert on African American history.
If you’re looking for a way to spend your bonus day in February, you could do much worse than to take a day looking back at the best of Conan O’Brien’s late night career. Be sure to let us know your favorite, most Leap-A-Licious bits from the Late Night days.
