Late Night with Seth Meyers looked at how the Democratic Party and the media have reacted to the rise of Senator Bernie Sanders.

After taking a week off, Late Night with Seth Meyers returned on Monday night. The return could not have come at a better time as both the race to become the Democratic nominee for president and media coverage heats up. Front and center in both cases is Senator Bernie Sanders, the subject of the latest edition of “A Closer Look.”

Senator Sanders is coming off a victory in the Nevada caucuses in which he was far and away the top choice over second place finisher Joe Biden. The win, along with his performances in Iowa and New Hampshire, has Senator Sanders in the driver’s seat when it comes to the Democratic nominee field.

However, not everyone is excited to see Senator Sanders performing so well. Yes, it means that Saturday Night Live fans would get a lot more Larry David going forward. But for establishment Democrats and some media members, panic is starting to set in.

To understand the how and why, Seth Meyers used “A Closer Look” to get to the bottom of the story. The Late Night host couldn’t help but be amused at the panic caused by Senator Sanders.

Typically when Seth Meyers sets his sights on cable news coverage, it’s to mock Fox News for its support of President Donald Trump. But here, Meyers puts together a highlight package of CNN, MSNBC, and others seemingly unable to report Senator Sanders’ victories in a straightforward fashion.

Meyers goes over the various ways in which cable news pundits have tried to spin the story. Combining the votes of moderates against Senator Sanders, comparing 2016 to 2020, and outright sighing at the results all seem to suggest that members of the media aren’t as excited about Bernie Sanders as many voters.

Political consultant James Carville and television host Chris Matthews are two individuals who get called out personally by Meyers. Both appear to be doing their best to drum up fear around the possibility of a President Bernie Sanders. But Meyers isn’t quite echoing their alarms and instead points out that no one seems interested in finding out why Bernie Sanders is doing so well.
