Once again the White House Correspondents’ Association looks to late night television for hosts as Kenan Thompson gets the gig.

The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner has gone through some changes in the past few years. But the 2020 event will get back to its roots and do so with the help of one of television’s longest-tenured comedians. Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson will host.

The dinner has always been a nonpartisan event honoring journalists and celebrating free press. It has also become something of a roast of the president, with several prominent comedians hosting over the years.

But much of that changed when Donald Trump took office. The president is known for having thin skin when it comes to critics and has made his displeasure about Saturday Night Live and the rest of late night television well known. President Trump has not attended the event for the past three years and is unlikely to change that with the announced host and entertainers.

Kenan Thompson, in the middle of his 17th season on Saturday Night Live will host and get an assist from comedian Hasan Minhaj. The former Daily Show correspondent now hosts The Patriot Act on Netflix and will serve as the featured entertainer. Minhaj also took on that role for the 2017 event.

Thompson joins a list of several other comedians with Saturday Night Live connections to perform at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Others include Chevy Chase, Al Franken, Conan O’Brien, Darrell Hammond, Seth Meyers and Cecily Strong.

For Minhaj, he returns to the event and continues the legacy of several other late night personalities to entertain the WHCA including Michelle Wolf, Larry Wilmore, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Kimmel.

Given the way Saturday Night Live treats President Trump, we can expect Thompson to go all out in what could be the last dinner with Donald Trump in office. While Thompson rarely appears in sketches based on President Trump, he has found a recurring character in the “Them Trumps” parody of Empire.

It’s possible that Thompson could call in some favors from his Saturday Night Live family to not only write but perform some bits at the dinner. Minhaj has already proven he has what it takes to deliver in the spotlight so fans should certainly expect more of the same from him.
